August is supposed to be the hottest month of the year but Kevin has told me that he heard reports that it is record breaking LOW temperatures for August this year. Crazy!! I have thought that it is much cooler this summer than in summers past. Usually by now I am ready for summer to end and cooler weather to begin...but not this year...I wish we had every summer with temperatures like these!
I have been trying to do something fun and exciting with LillyAnne each day that I have her....and Homemade Ice Cream is FUN for all ages! I received Strawberries in my Bountiful Basket this week and decided to make Strawberry Ice Cream with them...plus it's Ampa's favorite.
The recipe I created for homemade ice cream is very simple...all you need is...
1 quart Whipping Cream or Half and Half
2 cups Sugar
1 lb of fresh Strawberries
Food Chopper or Processor
Straws!?.....you'll see...
and no...I do not add egg yoke like a lot of recipes call for...YUCK!
The first thing you'll need to do is wash your Strawberries and then hull them with a straw as pictured above. I learned this neat little trick just a couple of months ago from Tightwad Mom's Frugal Forum. You can check out the post she did...HERE.
After you have hulled all your Strawberries then you will want to mash them, chop them or food processor them and mix in with the Whipping Cream and Sugar in mixing bowl and then add to your ice cream maker.
You can pick up an Ice Cream Maker just about anywhere but my favorite place is the Thrift Stores! I picked up this Ice Cream Maker at D.I. for $5.00. What a deal! I recommend getting one like mine... the bowl goes in the freezer and all you have to do is add ingredients and let it go! I love it!!
This is a video of LillyAnne waiting so patiently for the mixture to turn into ice cream or maybe it was Amma trying to wait so patiently for it to turn into ice cream....it does take quite a bit of time. It took about 1 hour and half to firm up...and this can be an eternity for a 2 year old! LOL!!
LillyAnne made it so FUN!
She is waiting....
and waiting...
and waiting some more.
After all the waiting... here is what it looks like...
Add some chocolate syrup and banana's for banana split sundaes!!
Yum Yum!!
Give it a try or call me and come over and we will make some together!!
Love it!
Amma
